Wow, what a good lookin’ couple!

Wow. Twelve years. A dozen. (Almost) One-eighth of a century. You’ve been my wife for 12 years, you’ve been my best friend for longer than that. I recently read a New York Times article that discussed whether our spouse should be our best friend . The article was in response to one that argues that your spouse shouldn’t be your best friend . There are good arguments on both sides, but I think the bottom line for me is,
Calling the person you’re married to your best friend may be shorthand for saying that you actually like your spouse and that you have shared history, shared lives and shared dreams. But in the end, the expression doesn’t do justice to the full meaning of marriage or to the full meaning of friendship .

Babe, I’m so glad that we’ve been on this journey together–as friends and spouses. Who could have imagined that those young kids would grow up to be us? Think of all that we’ve been through…did you even imagine that 12 years ago? I know I never imagined that we’d be where we are now, I only knew that we would be together. And guess what? Here we are, still together. Stronger than ever. Older, wiser, and still hot AF (as the kids these days like to say).

One of the songs in our wedding video was You’re Like Comin’ Home by Lonestar. When we picked that song, little did I know how true it would feel to me all these years later. Despite all the detours, changes in plans, challenges, heartaches, and stresses we have faced together, seeing you, being with you, is like coming home for me. I can’t imagine my life with out you. Being close to you provides me with the peace of mind. Being in your arms, makes me feel safe from the world (and totally disgusts our kids, and I love that!). You are my serenity.

I’m reminded of a great quote that was shared with us by some dear friends a few years ago. It comes from Christian philosopher C.S. Lewis. In it, he is discussing friendship, but the truth he shares, I believe, applies equally well to marriage,
In friendship…we think we have chosen our peers. In reality a few years’ difference in the dates of our births, a few more miles between certain houses, the choice of one university instead of another…the accident of a topic being raised or not raised at a first meeting–any of these chances might have kept us apart. But, for a Christian, there are, strictly speaking no chances. A secret master of ceremonies has been at work. Christ, who said to the disciples, ‘Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you,’ can truly say to every group of Christian friends, ‘Ye have not chosen one another but I have chosen you for one another.’ The friendship is not a reward for our discriminating and good taste in finding one another out. It is the instrument by which God reveals to each of us the beauties of others. They are no greater than the beauties of a thousand other men; by friendship God opens our eyes to them. They are, like all beauties, derived from Him through the friendship itself, so that it is His instrument for creating as well as for revealing. At this feast it is He who has spread the board and it is He who has chosen the guests. It is He, we may dare to hope, who sometimes does, and always should, preside. Let us not reckon without our Host .
I am grateful every day, but today especially, for all the work that it took for us to meet, and, that you said yes to me. I love you, Beloved. Happy anniversary!

Isn’t she fine! And on a beach, doesn’t get any better than that.

Ridin’ restless under broken sky
Weary traveler, somethin’ missin’ inside
Always lookin’ for a reason to turn around
Desperate for a little peace of mind
Just a little piece of what I left behind
Well, I found it now, you’re like comin’ home

You’re like a Sunday mornin’, pleasin’ my eyes
You’re a midsummer’s dream under a star-soaked sky
That peaceful easy feelin’ at the end of a long, long road
You’re like comin’ home, you’re like comin’ home, alright

Go head an’ let your hair fall down
This wanderlust, it’s gone now
I’m here in your arms, I’m safe from the world again
These are the days that can’t be erased
Baby, there isn’t a better place
You’re like heaven, you’re like comin’ home

You’re like a Sunday mornin’, pleasin’ my eyes
You’re a midsummer’s dream under a star-soaked sky
That peaceful easy feelin’ at the end of a long, long road
You’re like comin’ home

You’re that innocence, that serenity
That long-lost part of me

You’re like a Sunday mornin’, pleasin’ my eyes
A midsummer’s dream under a star-soaked sky
That peaceful easy feelin’ at the end of a long, long road

You’re like a Sunday mornin’, pleasin’ my eyes
You’re a midsummer’s dream under a star-soaked sky
That peaceful easy feelin’ at the end of a long, long road
You’re like comin’ home, yeah, you’re like comin’ home
Baby, you’re like comin’ home, you’re like comin’ home

Go head an’ let your hair fall down, oh yeah
You’re like comin’ home, baby, you’re like comin’ home, oh yeah
You’re like comin’ home, you’re like comin’ home
You’re like comin’ home, you’re like comin’ home, oh yeah
