December 10, 2016 is Human Rights Day, a celebration of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN General Assembly. Following World War II, the UN General Assembly adopted the declaration as a “common standard” Â of human rights recognition and “of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family [which] is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world” . Although not legally binding, over the years parts of the Declaration have been included in international treaties and other agreements. Each year on December 10th, we are reminded of the importance of standing up for the rights of those who have been marginalized in our own communities and around the world. I invite you to look for opportunities to serve in your community to help those that might be suffering violations of their human rights. This website has some great ideas as a starting point.
